Van Goghs 'Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette' , Custom handmade oil painting reproduction

Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette is an early work by Vincent van Gogh

The small and undated oil-on-canvas painting featuring a skeleton and cigarette is part of the permanent collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It was most likely painted in the winter of 1885–86 as a satirical comment on conservative academic practices, during his time at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, Belgium.

The original work measures 32 by 24.5 centimetres (12.6 in × 9.6 in). It is considered a vanitas or memento mori, at a time when Van Gogh himself was in poor health

The oil painting was commission by one of our of private collector clients.

The oil painting reproduction on canvas was one of our most challenging projects and also one our finest work. The challenging aspect of reproducing Van Gogh’s painting is getting the feel of the painting right, which essentially means capturing the essence of his style of painting. His use of color palettes, capturing his use of different shades, the interplay of light and shade in the painting, and most importantly getting his brush strokes right, which gives the painting his unique style. He was famed for his bold, dramatic brush strokes which expressed emotion and added a feeling of movement to his works. It´s thought that he often used paint straight from the tube (impasto).

We worked very hard over several days to recreate and reproduce the painting, understanding his feel and use of bold colours, the technique of his signature style, his bold and urgent brush strokes which gave his creations an added feeling of movement.  The outcome of the all the hard work is painting you see here in the images and video.

Our client was very happy with the end result and deeply appreciated and complimented our efforts.  We were elated when the painting was over, as not only this painting was one of our most challenging projects till date, but was also one of the most satisfying projects we have undertaken. You don’t get the opportunity to reproduce an oil painting of Van Gogh’s very often. We are thankful to our client, for giving us an opportunity which challenged us and tested our skills.
